The project is structured around four over-arching domains; Scenarios, Adaptation, Mitigation and Policy Appraisal. These are further sub-divided into Work Packages. In addition, we are conducting 4 case studies where the synergies and trade-offs betwee climate change mitigation and adaptation startegies are being analysed. Scenarios Domain is laying out framing scenarios that span a range of climate futures from a 2 degree Centigrade stabilization scenario, where the primary challenge is mitigation, to a 4 degree Centigrade warming scenario, for which impact and adaptation costs may be substantial. Select Work Package S for more information. Mitigation Domain is evaluating the costs and effectiveness of different mitigation options at the EU and the global level, including issues of international trade, technology transfer, competitiveness and investments. See Work Package M1 (Mitigation at the Euopean Level) and Work Package M2 (Mitigation at the Global Level) for more information.
Adaptation Domain is developing a quantitative knowledge base on Europe's vulnerability to climate change. We are analysing social, technical and environmental factors that influence adaptive capacity to climate change with a particular focus on extreme weather events. See Work Package A1 (Assessing Potential Impacts and Adaptive Capacity) and Work Package A2 (Coping With Extremes).
Policy Domain is mapping and appraising the effectiveness of existing policies in the EU and is developing portfolios of novel policy options to address current insufficiencies. We are also laying out the requirements for climate change policy appraisal, which can enhance social learning and the emergence of innovative solutions, building on lessons learnt in the 4 ADAM case studies. See Work Package P1 (Development of a Policy Appraisal Framework), Work Package P2 (Policy and Governance) and Work Package P3 (ADAM Case Studies).
